Clean Bathtub - How to Clean the Bathtub

Taking a nice, long soak in a bathtub is one of life's pleasures. Perhaps you think that cleaning the tub means pouring or sprinkling on some cleanser and sloshing it off with a sponge or rag. While this is a common way to clean the tub, to keep a bathtub looking its best means that you need to know exactly what type of material was used in making it, and what the best cleaning method is for that particular material.

To find out how best to clean out your tub, you should consult with the manufactures directions first, since they would know what to use and what to avoid. However, in most homes and apartments, you may find it impossible to know what material the tub is made out of. If possible, ask the home owner.

Most bathtubs are made out of one of the following:

Acrylic

Fiberglass

Porcelain

Cleaning Acrylic Tubs

You can use a non-abrasive cream cleaner on your acrylic tub. Apply the cleaner with a soft cloth, rinse away the cleaner thoroughly, also using the cloth to dry the interior. If your tub should have any deposits from bubble bath cubes or cleaner build up, you can use a neutral detergent cleaner to get rid of these.

If the bathtub is scratched, you can use a metal based cleaner to gently rub away the scratched areas. Buff with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Fiberglass Tubs

Fiberglass tubs are very delicate and need to be cleaned gently. The paint can come off easily if you use abrasive cleansers. Use a mild detergent cleaner and rub the tub gently. Don't allow scratches or heavy build up of deposits to occur.

Cleaning Porcelain Tubs

Cleaning a porcelain bathtub can sometimes be a challenge. You don't want to use harsh cleaners because it will dull the surface over time. A real problem is stubborn marks that stain the surface. You can often get these out by rubbing the stains with paraffin or turpentine. Rinse out the tub with a solution of mild detergent and water.

If your tub has blue green colored stains, this is from the constant dripping of water from the faucet. First, you'll want to change the washer in the faucet, then, use a cleaner that's specially designed for porcelain bathtubs.
